Everything I need

everything i need

“The Lord is my shepherd; I have everything I need.” Psalm 23:1 (NCV)

“I need, I need, I need it!”.

So often we can find ourselves saying we need this, we need that or we need the other. We might say we need to find the right boyfriend or girlfriend, we need to wear the best designer labels, we need to buy the fastest car or we need more money. But in reality, these are just wants, and these things compared to eternity are pretty unimportant, wouldn’t you agree?

A lot of these things aren’t wrong in and of themselves, but they’re aren’t everything. But today’s verse tells us of a way we can have EVERYTHING we need. Today’s verse says the ‘Lord is my Shepherd; I have everything I need’. Now, this language is a bit odd to us today; being a Shepherd isn’t actually a common job to have these days, is it?

When was the last time you saw a Shepherd? Do you know what they do?

Well, they look after sheep, they make sure they are safe, they protect them against wolves who attack the sheep. Shepherds lead and direct the sheep, and help them when they get stuck on a wire fence or fall into a ditch.

How awesome is this verse, because it says God is our Shepherd and we are like sheep and He will never let us down, He will always look after us – and in Him, we have all we need – all we could ever want. When we get to know God closely He satisfies us so we don’t need to go chasing after things of this world that can never satisfy and leave us always with a lust for more. When it comes down to it, God is really everything we need.

Cube Challenge: Ask God to show how He is your Shepherd – ask Him to lead you, guide you, protect you and help you when you get stuck in life.
