While he was still speaking, there came from the ruler’s house some who said, “Your daughter is dead. Why trouble the Teacher any further?” But overhearing what they said, Jesus said to the ruler of the synagogue, “Do not fear, only believe” – Mark 5:35-36
What we go through in life at times can be so much like the story in today’s verse.
We might feel that, just like the death of the ruler’s daughter, we find ourselves in an impossible situation. It may feel like there seems to be no answer from Jesus, like there is no breakthrough, like nothing is happening in our work, family or school situation and we’ve cried out to Jesus for ages.
Sometimes we might feel like the people in this passage who said “why trouble the Teacher any further?”. In other words, ‘why should I bother asking Jesus, it’s too late’. We might feel like we’ve tried and tried and tried, we’ve cried and yet, nothing seems to be changing, our problem and issue still seems massive and unmovable. But Jesus response isn’t ‘it’s okay you tried your best’, ‘that was a good effort’ or ‘it wasn’t my will for this problem to be solved in your life’, but actually Jesus says these amazing, shocking and yet faith-filled words.
Jesus says this ‘do not fear, only believe’. So, you could put it like this – don’t be afraid, don’t give up or give in, but believe, trust God, have faith and keep on believing that with God nothing is impossible and breakthrough is on its way!
